Kitchen Energy Savers

Energy Star Appliances

  • Refrigerators: ENERGY STAR® certified models use up to 20% less energy.
  • Dishwashers: Skip the heat-dry cycle and air-dry your dishes to reduce dishwasher energy consumption by up to 50%.
  • Cooking: Use lids on pots and pans—this can cut stovetop energy use by around 14%.

Seasonal Tips for Summer

Cook Smart
Give your stovetop and oven a break during hot weather.
Use your barbecue or try no-cook and no-bake recipes to avoid heating up your home.

Use Fans Effectively
Ceiling and portable fans create a cooling breeze and reduce the need for air conditioning.
With fans running, you can raise your thermostat a degree or two—helping your AC run less often and use less energy.
Choose ENERGY STAR® certified fans, which are up to 50% more efficient.

Choosing a New Air Conditioner
Look for the ENERGY STAR® label when purchasing a new AC unit.
Proper sizing is essential—a unit that’s too large will cycle on and off inefficiently, costing more to operate.
Consult a certified HVAC contractor to ensure you choose the right model for your space.v

Home Comfort – Heating, Cooling & Hot Water

Programmable Thermostats
Reduce heating and cooling costs by up to 10%. Suggested settings:

  • 22°C when home
  • 20°C when away (fall/winter)

Annual Furnace Maintenance
A yearly check-up by a licensed HVAC professional can improve efficiency by up to 20%.

Pipe Wraps
Reduce heat loss and get hot water faster by insulating hot and cold water pipes. Note: Never insulate plastic pipes.

Water Heater Insulation
An insulating blanket helps reduce heat loss and maximize savings.

Air Circulation
Ceiling fans help distribute warm air in winter as well—set them to rotate clockwise at low speed.

Weather-Stripping
Sealing gaps around doors and windows can reduce heating and cooling needs by up to 20%.

Lighting & Electronics

LED Lighting

LEDs last up to 30 times longer and use up to 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs, great indoors and outdoors.

Electronics in standby mode can account for up to 20% of household electricity use. Use power bars with timers or auto-shutoff features to eliminate wasted energy.

Peak Perks

https://www.saveonenergy.ca/For-Your-Home/Peak-Perks

The Peak Perks program rewards Ontario homeowners and small-businesses with a smart thermostat for reducing electricity use during summer peak-demand periods. Upon enrollment, participants receive a $75 virtual prepaid Mastercard®, and $20 for each additional year they remain in the program.

During peak-demand events — typically weekday afternoons between June and September — your smart thermostat may be briefly adjusted by up to 2 °C for a few hours. Beforehand, your home may be “pre-cooled” to help keep you comfortable, and once the event ends your settings go back to normal. You’re always in control and may opt out at any time.

By participating in Peak Perks, you help reduce strain on Ontario’s electricity grid — supporting more reliable, affordable energy for everyone.

Energy Affordability Program

https://www.saveonenergy.ca/For-Your-Home/Energy-Affordability-Program

The Energy Affordability Program helps income-eligible Ontario households reduce electricity costs and make their homes more comfortable — at no cost.

Eligible participants may receive either a free in-home energy assessment followed by upgrades (like LED lighting, efficient appliances, insulation, weather-stripping, or even a cold-climate heat pump) or a self-install “Energy Saving Kit” with items such as LED bulbs, faucet aerators, weather-stripping, and more.

If you qualify, you may save hundreds of dollars a year on energy bills — and enjoy a more efficient, comfortable home.

To get started or check your eligibility, call 1-844-770-3148 or complete the application form on SaveOnEnergy.ca.

Home Renovation Savings Program

https://www.homerenovationsavings.ca/

The Home Renovation Savings Program helps eligible Ontario homeowners access generous rebates for a wide range of energy-efficient home upgrades — from heat pumps and insulation to solar panels and smart thermostats.

You can either complete a full home energy assessment and bundle multiple upgrades (insulation, new windows/doors, air sealing, heat-pump water heaters) or opt for single upgrades without an assessment (e.g., cold-climate heat pumps, solar + battery storage, attic insulation, smart thermostats, efficient appliances) — giving you flexibility to renovate “your way.”

Rebate examples include up to $12,000 for a qualified heat pump, up to $10,000 for solar + storage, up to $7,700 for insulation (when bundled), $75 for a smart thermostat, and additional savings on windows, doors, water-heaters, and efficient appliances.

By participating, homeowners can significantly reduce their energy consumption, lower bills, and improve home comfort — while contributing to a greener, more efficient energy future.
